Words With Only One Vowel
Every short word with exactly one vowel: 5,598 words in total, and they are surprisingly easy to overlook when scanning a letter circle.
Why one-vowel words are the ones you miss
When a puzzle stalls, the cause is usually the same: you are holding a pile of consonants and one lonely vowel, and your brain keeps trying to build words that need two. The words on this page are the ones that fit that exact situation, which is why they are worth knowing as a group rather than individually.
English lets a single vowel carry a surprising amount of weight. SPLIT, SHRUG, THIRDS and STRAND all run five or six letters on one vowel apiece. Once you start looking for that shape deliberately, the consonant-heavy hand stops feeling like a dead end.
The Y problem
Y is the reason this list is longer than people expect. In words like MYTH, GYMS, DRYLY and SYNC, Y is doing the job of a vowel, which means a letter circle with no A, E, I, O or U in it can still produce words.
For the purposes of this page, Y is counted as a consonant. That is a deliberate choice: it means words like MYTH appear here as one-vowel words when many players would call them no-vowel words, and it keeps the list useful for the situation it is meant for.
How to work a consonant-heavy hand
Start with the vowel and build outward. Fix your single vowel in the middle position and try consonant pairs on either side. ST, TR, SP, CH, SH and BR account for a large share of the word openings in this list.
Then check the endings. -NG, -CK, -TH, -ST and -MP close a great many one-vowel words, and running through those five endings against the consonants you hold is faster than working alphabetically.
Finally, remember the plural trick. If you have an S, almost any one-vowel noun on this list can take it, which turns a three-letter find into a four-letter slot filled.
When to use the list and when to use the solver
This page is a reference for the general shape of the problem. It is useful for learning which words exist and for browsing when you want to get better at spotting them unaided.
For an actual stuck puzzle, the solver is faster. It takes the specific letters in front of you and returns only what they can make, one-vowel words included, without you having to scan.
About the word list
These words come from a standard English word list filtered to entries of three to five letters containing exactly one of A, E, I, O or U. It includes uncommon and archaic words alongside everyday ones.
Your game may not accept every word here. Wordscapes and Word Connect maintain separate dictionaries, and the overlap is close but not exact.
